John Mitchell
was a miner in Georgetown
who had grown up in
Cornwall,
England.
He was known as a Cornwall Jack.
He traded a local man a set of matched mules in
exchange for the man’s daughter to become his bride. John
and his wife Martha had thirteen children and later owned
farming property in the Mimbres Valley.
Today there are many Mitchell descendants still
living in and around the
Mimbres Valley.
The Mitchell Cabin is decorated with
Mata Ortiz pottery from
Mexico.
The pottery is very colorful and unique and
replicates pots once made by ancient Indians.
The Mata Ortiz story is about a village that nearly
died when the rail road ceased to exist and was later
revived when a fellow who lived there, named Juan Quezada,
rediscovered how to make the beautiful pottery and taught
his family and many villagers how to do so also.
Over the past 30 years, many tour buses have visited
the village of Mata Ortiz for their world renowned
pottery.
This cabin is very private being on its
own drive and has a large side yard.
One gets a real warm and cozy feeling with the homey
décor found in this cabin.
This cabin has a roomy side porch to extend its
living space.
