Gila River

Fly fishing in the Gila River

The Gila River has its source in the Black Range of the Gila.  It is a tributary of the Colorado River, 640 miles long flowing through the Gila National Forest and the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.  It eventually flows into the Colorado River at Yuma, Arizona.

After the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848, the Gila River was part of the border between the United States and Mexico.  In 1853 the Gadsden Purchase extended the American border with Mexico many miles to the south.

Kit Carson explored the Gila seeking routes for the United States Army to assist them in their acquisition of California from Mexico.

Geronimo was born a short distance from the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.
